The Dogs That Grew Wool and the People Who Love Them

Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest bred little, fluffy white dogs that provided for them, both materially and spiritually.

Interesting
Will not be getting any small, white, fluffy dogs, however.

Back when the Pet Expo was a thing at the fairgrounds, we always made it a point to visit the Leonberger breeders table. They're huge dogs with long, silky fur.

Their exhibits included sweaters and hats made from the fur and there was usually someone in the booth knitting something new.

My late neighbor was a spinner and weaver. I gave her a small handful of our Newf's fur and she twisted it by hand and thought that yarn could be spun from it because it kind of caught on itself. Golden retriever fur, not so much. It just slid apart.

A friend had one. He could not wear it past a fire hydrant without stopping.

A family friend had huskies. She brushed them every day and saved the fur. After a while, she sewed a vest (like a down vest) and stuffed it with the dogs’ fur.
