I believe they are. There was a NYPost article linked in the one I posted, and it said that two Hasidic rabbis make a check of the eruv every Thursday to be sure it's in place before the Sabbath.

Sorry but i find it so annoying that people equate judaism with hasidism. That's like saying Jehovah's witnesses are representative of mainstream Christianity. Hasids are an extremist sect. They represent Jews about as much as right-wing evangelicals represent your average Episcopalian.

Back to the wire: While the NYPost article mentioned the eruv checkers as being Hasidim, I think those who pay attention to the eruv to the point of changing their behavior are generally orthodox Jews. I don't actually know, and am basing it only on the fact that I snooped around and discovered that Portland does in fact have an eruv near me, in a location that makes sense. "Makes sense" means a location where lots of orthodox Jews live. Here's a nice article about creating the eruv I'm talking about, which I bring up primarily because the congregations they refer to in the article as having helped or supported it are reform, conservative, and orthodox. I've never seen an "obvious" Hasidic Jew here - not to say they don't exist. | |||
