The city of Portland has seen by more than 50 straight nights of protests.
A particularly violent incident, shot by Portland Tribune reporter Zane Sparling, involved a 53-year old navy veteran and went viral on social media Saturday.
GRAPHIC WARNING: Some viewers may find the video of the incident disturbing.
He said he came to ask federal officers a simple question and was answered with a beating and tear gas.
Chris David, a Navy vet, was struck repeatedly by federal law enforcement officers outside the courthouse building.
“I stood there with my hands down by my sides and they just started whaling on me,” he said.
David said he had taken the bus downtown to attend the protest and wanted to ask federal officers a specific question: “And I stood in the street in front of them and I started asking them if they thought it was okay to violate their oath to the Constitution.”
He said one of the men shoved him backward.
“I lose my balance and fall backwards a bit, and then plant myself. That’s right when they start beating me. They kept hitting me with batons and I think they decided that wasn’t going to work, so they just two pepper spray hits I think I took, and that ended that,” David said. “That was not fun, so I flipped them off and walked to the corner of the park as best I could and I was losing my vision. I was just walking through a giant cloud of CS gas.”
David said he sat on a park bench, and a field medic named Tav came to his rescue, guiding him to someone’s car.
“I couldn’t see at all,” he said. “I could just see sort of shapes, vague shapes. Tav was frantically trying to get an ambulance to meet us there.”
David said they were able to flag down EMTs, and he went to the hospital. He said his hand is fractured hand and it will require surgery.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is crafting plans to deploy about 150 federal agents to Chicago this week, the Chicago Tribune has learned, a move that would come amid growing controversy nationally about federal force being used in American cities.
The Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI, agents are set to assist other federal law enforcement and Chicago police in crime-fighting efforts, according to sources familiar with the matter, though a specific plan on what the agents will be doing had not been made public.
One city official said the city was aware of the plan but not any specifics. The Chicago Police Department had no immediate comment.
One Immigration and Customs Enforcement official in Chicago, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak on the matter, confirmed the deployment was expected to take place. The official noted that the HSI agents, who are part of ICE, would not be involved in immigration or deportation matters.
It was unclear where all the agents would be coming from, though many were expected to be from agencies operating in the Chicago area. Questions remained about the chain of command they would fall under.
Sorry, Lightfoot's letter is an extended tut-tutting gussied up with a light scolding. Sound and fury, signifying supine weakness and handing the PR game to Trump.
The whole paragraph on "what we do not need ... blah, blah" is a perfect example.
I can practically hear the chuckling and see the smirks. The WH does not want to solve Chicago's or Portland's problems. The WH positively wants to stir up more conflict, including my proposed remedy #2.
I see only two paths here, and both are risky.
In Oregon, the AG has filed suit, including against the 10 "John Doe" unidentified agents making kidna... arrests off the streets.
I'm sure that will put the fear of God in Barr. A temporary restraining order might come in a few months time, and will likely be conveniently ignored pending appeal, since it's so important to the government to continue maintaining order by beating people. This is the high road strategy. Stick completely within the courts and work slowly, on the administration's timeline. Just try to win hearts and minds with thundering op-eds and open letters. Hmmm.
Second choice. See Trump, and raise him big time. Declare that unidentified federal agents making arrests are subject to arrest by state and local police. Go public with the rationale for the actions and try to win the public relations battle while you prepare to find a unit of these "forces" to pick up off the streets and put in jail for a few days. Then the ball in is Trump's court. He often blusters for a while, and then backs down. Could happen again.
