The parade was disrupted around 10:10 a.m. Monday after shots were fired. Witnesses reported seeing heavy police presence and fire vehicles. Some witnesses told WGN they saw multiple people running from the parade.

wtgEyewitness was just describing grabbing his five year old son and the dog and running. He tried unsuccessfully to break a window of a business to hide. Shooting stopped and he decided to run. When the shooting started again he put his son and dog in a dumpster; some people were nearby. He saw someone get shot in the back.
When the shooting stopped again, he went back to look for the rest of his family. Everyone's OK.

wtgThe local hospital's response is amazing.
After being notified by the police about a mass shooting, the hospital went into it's emergency notification mode to mobilize their medical staff. They had 20 extra doctors and another 20 advanced nursing staff in the ER when the injured started coming in. Trauma surgeons, orthopedic specialists...
The police and fire departments are remarkable, too.
It's an affluent suburb with a lot of resources. If you've seen Risky Business or Ferris Beuller's Day Off, you know Highland Park. The doctor we used to see has an office just a block away from where this happened. Mr wtg and I have eaten at the pancake house that's right on the corner where the shooting happened.
This is awful close to home.
