That was an extraordinary story. I'm old enough to remember the terrors of polio.

The vaccine research by Dr. Jonas Salk took place in my area and some it literally in my back yard. A building that once housed laboratory animals used to be directly down the hill from my house. It's since been demolished.

This exhibit at the University of Pittsburgh recalls the fight against polio and includes an iron lung.
