Thank you all very much for your caring, much welcome words.

PD's comments on the widow were especially helpful.

There is actually much more going on making this period all the more devastating - about this issue and another (altogether separate) one. I'll delay confiding them, though.

I'd especially appreciate comments and advice on the family issue and pertinent knowledge if any on the second (which is medical).

As regards the wife-in-law. You are in a vulnerable place right now. Do not, do not be vulnerable with her. Remember the fable about the frog who accepted the ride across a pond from a scorpion. If you don't know it, I'll be back and will recount it. But the moral of the tale is that a scorpion must sting its victim to death, because that is its nature. People don't change.

Amanda, I'm sorry to hear you are processing all this. I agree, "complex grief" is a good term. Take care of yourself and your sons and, as pique says, don't get sucked into taking care of any ex's.
