These numbers put Italy's CFR at 4.2%. Yikes. I know, I know, that number will float....but still worrisome....

The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy has risen by 49 to 197, the Civil Protection Agency said on Friday, the largest daily increase in fatalities since the contagion was uncovered two weeks ago.

The accumulative number of cases in the country, which has been hardest hit by the virus in Europe, totalled 4,636 against 3,858 on Thursday.

I know someone who was in Venice for Carnevale. She had a heckuva time getting back to the States, different airlines had different information. She arrived at JFK, no one took a second look at her, and she was waved through customs.

Angelo Borrelli, who heads up Italy's civil protection agency, said the outbreak had not hit the number of hospital beds available.

"For the moment, there are no major difficulties regarding the number of beds available in hospital structures," said Borrelli.

"When the intensive care beds are all occupied in one region (...) our coordination centre finds them in the neighbouring regions."

Of the 3,858 coronavirus cases, 1,790 people are in hospital and 351 in intensive care.

It's not just about CFR. It's about the medical resources required to address the disease.

Those last stats are telling. About half the cases require hospitalization and ten percent are in intensive care.

Wow.

12:26 pm: Italy coronavirus deaths slow down, cases leap

The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy has slowed down but the total number of cases in the country leapt by over 1,200, the Civil Protection Agency said.

Deaths due to the infectious virus were up 36 to 233, the head of the agency, Angelo Borrelli, said in a news conference. They were up 49 on Friday, in the biggest rise since the outbreak of the illness in Italy.

The total number of cases in the country was up to 5,883 compared to 4,636 announced on Friday, showing that contagion shows no sign of slowing down.

Borrelli added that of those originally infected, 589 had fully recovered while 567 were being treated in intensive care.

The contagion came to light over two weeks ago and is focused on a handful of hotspots in the north of Italy, but cases have now been confirmed in each of the country’s 20 regions, with deaths recorded in eight of them. – Reuters

Pope cancels main public appearances and will stream them online

Pope Francis will not address crowds from his usual position in the window overlooking St Peter’s Square, the Vatican said Saturday, with his regular appearances being streamed online instead.

The move is an effort to prevent crowds from gathering as the coronavirus continues to grip Italy, with at least one confirmed case in Vatican City.

“These choices are necessary to avoid risks of spreading COVID-19 due to gathering,” the statement said.

The pontiff will also not hold his general audience from St Peter’s Square on Wednesday. Both addresses usually see thousands of people gather to hear the voice of the Pope.

They’re locking down Lombardy, a region of 10MM which is the heart of their industrial base.

Two weeks ago they had 9 known cases.

Yes, very old population though. I read the median age for the deaths was 81, as remarkable as that sounds.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Monday he will sign a decree that extends the lockdown of the Lombardy region to the entire country as Italy’s COVID-19 death toll continues to rise.

People throughout the country should not leave their homes other than for work and emergencies, Conte said. He added that all public gatherings will be banned and sporting events suspended. The decision was made to protect the most vulnerable people in the country, he said, and the measures will take effect Tuesday.

“Stay at home,” Conte told reporters.
