Also reading Fear. Reading about the economic stuff at the moment. Sad, that Cohn is no longer at the White House.

Just finished reading "Paris in the Present Tense," the new Mark Helprin novel. It was a gift from the author. He thought it might be meaningful to me because of the musical themes in it. It is a profound and beautiful book that I am sure I will reread. And I almost never do that.
I haven't read this one but I love his writing.
Gotta get that. Winter's Tale is a favorite.

BernardSince I didn't get my order from Amazon in time for my trip, I hopped around the corner from my boss's place to a real live, fantastic, independent book store (there used to be so many of them) and found this fascinating history of colors. Very well written, full of esoterica.

That sounds like a line from my grandfather. And he wasn't very original.

I just blasted my way through "Educated," a memoir of a woman who grew up in a doomsday prepper family in Idaho. I found it fascinating and infuriating. I don't want to include any spoilers, because there are plenty of twists and turns. There were times when I got so angry I wanted to throw the book across the room. (Full disclosure, I was reading it on a kindle

).
It's a really fascinating look at what it's like to grow up being told that "everyone" is out to get you, and no one can be trusted outside the family. It really outlines how a family can descend into what I would describe as willful ignorance, and the power of a cult leader (in this case, the father).
I liked this so much I revived my book group! We’ll be discussing this next month. I liked this better than both Glass Castle and Hillbilly Elegy. More relatable, somehow.

I was pleased to learn that Mary Anna likes the book and actually teaches from it.

I’m only two chapters in but I highly recommend it based on what I’ve read so far. I’m listening to the audiobook, read by the author, and she does an excellent job narrating as well.

AdagioMI just finished the Prague Sonata by Bradford Morrow. A musical mystery/thriller about a lost 18th century sonata of unknown origin. Not perfect, but enjoyable.
Then I read Finders Keepers, the second of Stephen King’s Bill Hodges trilogy (the first was Mr. Mercedes). Not sure I want to read the third right now.
So what should I read next? I’m all caught up with Faye Longchamp! Although I’m doing a lazy re-read from the beginning; it’s like hanging out with old frinds.

AdagioMI don’t remember who recommended this to me, but I’m loving it. One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow, by Olivia Hawker.
