Pfizer Inc said on Monday its experimental COVID-19 vaccine was more than 90% effective, a major victory in the fight against a pandemic that has killed more than a million people, battered the world’s economy and upended daily life.

quote:
BioNTech Chief Executive Ugur Sahin told Reuters he was optimistic the immunisation effect of the vaccine would last for a year although that was not certain yet.

Seems like 2020 finally tries to make amends after being being a d..k for so many months!

First Biden, now BNT162b2.
"Boris botches Brexit" would be fine, too.

Biontech said they will have over 50 Million doses ready at the end of the year and could provide more than 1.3 Billion in 2021. As they collaborate with the Pfizer, I am sure that - in case of need - more could be produced.

To put these 90% into perspective: a good anti-influenca vaccine has a protection rate between 50-60%.

We were just discussing the protection rate of 90%. I don't think a 100% effective vaccine has ever existed.

90% is very very good and probably as good as it gets for COVID.

I read that the smallpox vaccine was/is 95% effective. We hit it out of the park our first time at bat.

Did you know that a smallpox vaccine was actually used in China as early as 200 BCE?

Yes this is really good news! Hopefully it moves forward without issues! 90% would be amazing!

90% would be outstanding. Then we can start talking about actual "herd immunity", not a fantasy based on poor or no understanding of the concept.

I understand that annual flu vaccines have a relatively low effectiveness because the very smart people who formulate them have to guess what strains will pop up where each year. It's different every year. And immunity is specific to a strain.

That will be a huge challenge with covid. Last I heard, there were at least eight different strains circulating the globe and it was established early on that even if you got immunity after infection, you only had immunity against that strain.

We'll still be wearing masks in public for years to come.

Two Three factoids regarding the Pfizer vaccine:

1) It needs to be stored at negative 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) Pfizer has sold vaccine doses to the US government, but did not take any federal money for vaccine development.

3) Pfizer will bypass government distribution channels and will instead do their own.

You're welcome.

I am satisfied with 90% -- much better than flu efficacy.

I sure hope this isnt an annual vaccine. If it works for several years, I'd be ok with it.

Will need to see proof of long term safety and efficacy, though.

I feel better that Trump won't be involved.

We may have 10 more varieties of vaccine to choose from over the next few months.

And Pfizer's claim of 90% awaits more work. That's preliminary based on small sample size I think.
