They'll work fine in a garage, provided the garage has at least some insulation and the door seals fairly well. There are kits available to insulate garage doors - I used one at my house and it works great!

Most of them are made by Whynter, and I've been responsible for maintaining a few of them. They work fine and the folks at Whynter are real good about providing parts and such. The ones that also heat might be a good choice for a garage.

For some installations you might like to add a condensate pump . Water runs in to the box via gravity and when it gets full the pump comes on and pumps the water wherever you want it to go - maybe through a hole in the window adapter for the hose.

Edit: I see some models now have the pump built in and other models use some sort of evaporation scheme (probably spraying condensate water on the condenser coil) and say they don't require a drain at all. Worth checking out before you buy one.

WTG, Steve, thanks!

Mr. SK may soon need one of those for his exercise space.

joe, go have a look at what Wirecutter (at the NYT) recommends. We bought a small window unit last year that they recommended and have been extremely happy with it.

There were no double hose units around when I bought my a/cs. They work well in this dry climate. Have never needed a pan for the water produced.
