For the first time ever, the Emergency Alert on my Comcast cable was for something other than a weather emergency or monthly test. It was an announcement from Mayor Lightfoot about the stay-at-home orders being in place 24/7, and the closure of the lakefront paths and 606.

The nonprofit that I work for has done much like Steve's example. We moved our farmer's market online/phone. Most of our customers are on SNAP or HIP(a Mass program) so we can accommodate them via online or phone orders. Their orders are packed in a bag with their name on it and they are given a 15 minute window to pick up under our tent in the parking lot. Those who are housebound will get their produce delivered by us, those who cannot pay will get it for free. Did I say that I LOVE my job? And yesterday our Governor extended our school and day care closing to May 4th. So many families that rely on feeding their kids at school will need more help for a longer time. So much for the Easter deadline, just sayin..

I have a stack of laboratory drawer units that were designed for holding prepared slides. Industrial sturdy. Mrs. pj bought it for crafts and it turned out the drawers were just the wrong size. I've had it on craigslist for a couple months. It's out in the garage. A couple days ago, I got a reply to the ad. The woman asked the exact dimensions. I replied with the exact dimensions. She said she wants it (for her mother's essential oils) and would come over to get it. The she called me. She said that as she was putting on her shoes, her husband stopped her and reminded her that we are under statewide lockdown except for essential outings (which apparently doesn't include essential oils). She said she hates it when he's right, but he's right. I told her I'd take the ad down and when the order is lifted she can come get it.

We had a good supply of groceries when this started but now we’re running out of things. It’s gotten to where every dinner is like a new episode of Chopped.

Forget Amazon. They’ve completely screwed the pooch on this one. Ditto Whole Paycheck and Costco. Don’t believe me? Try ordering toothpicks in Amazon. 3X pricing. 3 week delivery. 3 weeks for toothpicks. Seriously? These retailers rely on grinding their suppliers for the last penny and the suppliers aren’t having any of it. Sure, they’ll send a pallet or two to a Costco but that’s not their focus. As it turns out, the stores getting stock are Dollar Stores, Big Lots and little stores like Circle K and liquor stores. Sharon shopped a Big Lots today and got everything on her list. Paper, cleaning supplies, bleach, paper towels, beans, rice. Canned veg. You can’t let buy any of these things on Amazon. What did these things cost? Maybe 5% more than you’d expect - far less than Amazon sellers are charging. I saw a bottle of toilet cleaner on Amazon today for $15. Never mind janitorial supply house and restaurant supply places. The Wharton boys will tell you that price is everything The Wharton boys may well be wrong.

I found tons of a Mexican brand of toilet paper at a local family owned grocery store. I stopped in to look for a few items and to pick up some of their in-house guacamole, which is fantastic. I don't know if I just happened to be there after a delivery or if they have different sources than other grocery chains. It looked pretty much like Charmin rather than an industrial type like Scott. I bought it for a friend who was coming up short; I haven't checked with her to see how the quality was. The store was generally very well stocked. I didn't see any empty shelves or shortages of anything.

You do know that Amazon has been refusing deliveries from suppliers of anything deemed non-essential until early April, right? Toothpicks are the very definition of non-essential. When something comes in stock at Amazon, it sells out instantly. The other day, I looked for Lysol wipes. Bingo! Found them at a reasonable price. Ordered some for my daughter, who'd been asking for them. Then tried to order more for myself. Nope, I had exceeded the quantity allowed. Ran downstairs to Mary Anna's computer to order them. Sold out. Today, I tried to order Mary Anna some canned vegetables from Target. WHILE I WAS CHECKING OUT, Target removed them from my cart. They'd gone out of stock. Things move that fast.

I talked to my friend Mark-the-food-guy this morning. He's a farmer now, but has been in the food processing biz all of his life. He's been talking to his food buddies and what they are telling him is that the shift from food service packaging to retail packaging is really messing them up. Food service business is down some 80% and retail buyers don't want things like tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets or vegetable oil in 55 gallon drums. Changing over the processing lines is going to take a while, and now everyone is running out of packaging. He also said the trend toward retail purchasers buying unprocessed stuff like lentils and dried beans has also thrown them off. Most of those crops used to go to processors and restaurants. Now they can't package it fast enough to satisfy the retail business. Interesting times.

Not sure if this is still going on, but early in the shutdown I went onto Amazon to buy Lysol wipes. Found several external sellers offering 3-packs (like the kind you get at Costco) for reasonable prices, ike $12 or so. BUT when you went to check out, they were charging $95 for shipping. Grrr. I did not partake. I figure that's how they were getting around Amazon's price gauging bots. I'm not sure if they've fixed that loophole yet.

Subway is selling off their inventory, presumably before it spoils. You order on line and they bring it to your car for you. The problems I see with the service are that nothing is particularly cheap and the packages are all too big. Subway Grocery
