Amazing craftsmanship. I love the exterior especially, except for the abomination that was added to the back of the house. Hard to believe that was the best they could come up with!

While there's a ton right with the house, there are also a lot of projects that I think most buyers would undertake. How quickly will a house of that size and in that price range sell in today's market?

I took one look and said, "ah, 1890!" Well, I was off by a year. Big Grin

Very interesting period piece, seemingly well-maintained and updated. Victorian exterior in stone instead of wood. Lots of period throwbacks to English medieval on the interior.

The dead giveaway for time period is all that oak! I went through a quarter-sawn oak period when I lived in upstate NY. We still have a room or two full of 1890-1910 NY-manufactured oak stuff.

We can be the crazy people in the big scary house that the neighborhood kids won’t go near.

But that house would justify doing the action work on my 9-foot Mason.

There are lots of houses like this one in our town. It's called the "Mansion District." If you click on the virtual tour there's a mini documentary about it and the neighborhood.

When we first moved here I was excited about possibly buying an historic home. The housing stock in most of Montana ranges from trailers to tract houses, so Helena presented a unique opportunity. But once we looked into the upkeep and the many issues facing these houses--one we walked away from needed a new sewer line to the tune of $50k, another would have cost nearly that much to replace the roof--and most of them haven't had the wiring updated so a fire hazard--we decided to rent.

We're in a 1970s rambler that has some dated features we'd love to change (and will, if we stay here)--popcorn ceilings and trailer quality interior woodwork and doors--but it's a great layout, the bedrooms are spacious instead of little warrens with low ceilings, it doesn't have stairs so steep you'll break your neck trying to use them, and everything is up to code.

We found that virtually all the historic homes we looked at were terribly grand on the main floor, but the upstairs rooms and bathrooms left a lot to be desired.

Nice sized model railroad in photo 74. I wonder if it's included in the sale.

The stairs being built today remind me of when I was on top of the Chichen Itza pyramid. Those steps are 10 inches deep. That was to make the bodies roll to the bottom after having their hearts plucked out.

I climbed that pyramid! The stairs in all the 1890s houses are nearly that bad. I guess nobody had size 10 feet back then.
