We're keeping an eye peeled for ranch homes in our area. Not a heads down effort, just taking a look around to see what's available.

This one is in what is considered one of the nicest areas in town. Big lots, big houses.

I've never seen anything like this in all the listings I've looked at. I was totally shocked.

I think this is beyond fixer upper.....

In order to down-sized? Are you currently in a two-floor house?

OMG. I think I'd call it a tear-downer....

Also, it's always interesting to me how prices differ from one market to the next. That house is roughly $50,000 more than we paid for our move-in ready house. Do you have any idea what the value is expected to be if that house were properly rehabbed?

Somebody else might try to renovate that house but I wouldn't touch it. In fact I am not even sure I'd go in it.

Way too much mold, who knows what kind, and plenty of rot in the walls/ceilings as well.

[edit] Yikes! Did you see the taxes? $23K in 2018! Eeker

Yeah that was the thing I found most concerning.

I also couldn't help but wondering about the background of the house, how long it had sat empty, and why... What a waste.

SK - yes, we are in a two story house. We're still OK with stairs but who knows how long that will last.

Our 95 year old friend and neighbor (two doors over) just moved to assisted living. We are good friends and also know the family and asked for right of first refusal to buy the house. It's a well maintained house but we are underwhelmed by the floor plan and we would have wanted to remodel a lot, so we took a pass.

We've been looking around casually at places for the last three or four years. We love our neighborhood and have some friends nearby, so that's a factor to keep us put for now. We could also install a stair lift if the stairs become a problem and/or add a second floor laundry.

Jokes aside, moving to a one-level is probably good. And moving sooner rather than later might be good too. At least I would think, esp. given these super low rates right now.

Yeah, this makes it hard. I didn't realize you'd been casually looking so long. But hopefully that way you'll find something in the neighborhood.

Steve, I had the same thought. I wouldn't want to set foot in that place.

If you look at the price history, they tried to sell it almost five years ago and it was listed for $629k. I'm assuming it was in better shape then, but even so, I can't believe it was worth anywhere near that price given it was not updated. The side yard is on a pretty major street.

It's on three quarters of an acre, and it's quite large at 4600 sq ft. That's probably why the taxes are so high, but I'm sure if they appealed they could have had them reduced.

Here are a few homes in the neighborhood, just for comparison. This one is on a nice quiet street and it's smaller and on a slightly smaller lot Taxes are half of the horror house.

This one is just around the corner from the ugly house, but it's on the busy street:

Those are both nice, although the first one is huge (3500 sf!)

Is this an organ?

I think it is.

Our current home is just under 1700 sq ft, and we don't need more space. Both of those houses in Scarsdale are way more house than we need. That whole neighborhood is the snooty part of town; we wouldn't fit in anyway!

Ok, I feel better! :P

I think our main floor is about 1600, then there's the half finished basement, so a little more than that. But yeah, 3500sq ft. would be a pita to clean, to say the least!

A gorgeous antique organ! Frank had one, now has another! I had one 40 years ago wish I had room for another now...
