On the opposite end of things, I recently did a review where I suspected that the author might be a graduate student. (I hope it's ethical to say so, since y'all don't know what journal I'm talking about and the whole thing is double-blind and y'all also don't know what I mean by "recently.")
Anyway, what I wished to convey was, "This needs to go back to the woodshed for some serious work before it comes back for another review," but I didn't want to be too harsh if it was somebody just starting out.
I stopped short of saying, "This needs to go back to the woodshed, sweetie, but I can see you worked hard," but I was thinking it.
