Breaking here in Chicago....several people have been shot at a large outdoor shopping mall in Oakbrook. Early reports are that two guys who seemed to know each other started shooting outside a Nordstrom store. Four people have been shot and the injuries appear to be non-life threatening. One of the four may be one of those involved in the original altercation. One person is in custody. The police aren't certain, but there's the possibility there was a third person involved in the initial shooting incident. Huge police presence and they're clearing out stores, one at a time, where people are still hunkered down. Merry Christmas. edit: https://abc7chicago.com/oak-br...enter-news/11378018/

I don’t like the references to injuries as non-life threatening, as if no big deal. But they can sure as hell be life-changing.

Oakbrook Center is an outdoor mall in a well-to-do suburb. It is always beautifully decorated for the holidays, so there were lots of families out doing their shopping. The live coverage last night (local stations broke into regular programming for several hours) talked a lot about the impact of the incident on the people who were there. As I watched the story unfolding, I was thinking about people who live with the possibility of being shot every time they walk out of their home. Heck, some get shot while they sit in their living rooms or sleep in their beds. But that doesn't happen in Oakbrook. Dunno. I don't understand how we got to be a country where you feel the need to take your gun to go Christmas shopping.

Interesting. Guess it's the "how awful it is" vs "how awful it could have been". Both are valid but my first instinct is to read it the second way.
