When I see stuff like that now, my reaction is always "ok, that's scary, where was there an earthquake that's causing this??"

Confused That's a peculiar phenomenon.

I found SK's response interesting. Is such a wave pattern likely indicative of earthquakes/tusnamis?

Also a question for Jon: What is the significance of the string of digits that comprise your signature?

I don't think that particular pattern is associated with tsunamis but after the 2011 earthquake/tsunami in eastern Japan, we saw so much programming about tsunamis, and one of the takeaways was that, any time the wave pattern is strange or the ocean does something unexpected, it could easily mean an earthquake somewhere has happened or a tsunami is coming. The most common sign (at least I believe it's most common...) is a significant decrease in the water, like the tide/wave goes out much more than it should. That is said to be likely to be following by a much bigger wave coming in, IOW a tsunami.
