Oh wow, this is an entire area that I had zero awareness of.

What about cochlear implants? that tech has been around for a long IIRC, and maybe doesn't have this kind of risk involved.

For something like that the company should have to put whatever funding and technology is needed for support in escrow in case they fold. If they don't fold, they should give former patients whatever is currently supported.
