We have both. Have found that friends with small hands or who have arthritis prefer stemmed; they can't hang onto a stemless glass.

Stemmed wine glasses for me. Those stemless ones, if rounded toward the bottom, always look like they’d be easily tipped over. Exception: a casual Italian or Spanish restaurant where non-fancy wine comes in a small tumbler. Works for me!

A plate of pasta, an oilcloth on the table, pour some wine in there, and you're all set! We actually used to have a homey Italian place like that in our neighborhood.
