I always wonder what happens if they hit turbulence? I'm gonna bet that white smoking jacket (or whatever it's called) won't seem like such a good idea. Ditto the bottles and (real?) glassware and china.

Oh yeah ...

Such a Golden Age ...

I started flying in the 60s, at the very end of that era as it was transitioning into mass travel. The glamor was gone, and the safety hadn't improved.

I just read Fly Girl by Ann Hood, a memoir of a stewardess/air hostess/flight attendant. Deregulation really did a number on air travel.

True, but it made it much more accessible to the masses. It’s always a trade-off.

If you think looting is bad wait until I tell you about civil forfeiture.

I started flying before deregulation so I've experienced some of those amenities. I remember the lounge area at the rear of a Continental Airlines plane and the cloth napkins and full meals served in coach back then. I've very seldom had the opportunity to fly first class, but I suspect at least some of that elegance still survives there, particularly on overseas flights.

As for me, I have very little desire to fly in today's airliners, particularly in coach.
