Had some hand painted tapers that I got as a gift years ago. They've been wrapped up and sitting in a drawer for years. I don't need them and they were pretty, so I put them out on Nextdoor for free. Transcript of conversation with interested party: Interested Party: Hi wtg, If they aren’t already gone, I would love to come pick them up today. Thank you. wtg: They are still available. What's a good time for you? We can do porch pickup. Interested Party: How about noon time? What is your address? (before I could respond) Interested Party: So sorry, I just got overruled by my wife. She said that we don’t need them and that they should go to someone who can use them. wtg:

I live in a small city on a busy street. All it takes is to put it out on the sidewalk with a "FREE" sign.. I have had somethings disappear in 15 minutes!

I have a bunch of stuff on CL and FB marketplace. If it doesn't sell, out it goes. No room in my life for things I don't use anymore.

Put more stuff out on Nextdoor, some for sale and some for giveaway. And some that didn't sell and that became giveaway. Have been seeing a trend....there seem to be a couple of people who pop up repeatedly and who are interested in our items....as long as they are free....so either there are resellers/flea marketers or I'm supporting the habits of a few hoarders. But for me, gone is good....

I haven't dabbled with any of these newer ways of disposing of things. I do know, when I lived within the boundaries of the city of Pittsburgh, that they had large trash pick-ups a couple of times per year where people put out things that they wanted rid of. When I was a college student and then a young newlywed, the items at the curb made a significant contribution to furnishing some apartments. I thought the city was (perhaps unintentionally or not) wise to allow items to be placed at the curb for a week or so before the scheduled pick-up date. Between people like me picking through the discards for useful items, and the junk men hauling away things that could be sold as scrap (particularly scrap metal items like appliances) , the city ended up with quite a bit less trash to pick up when they arrived.
