This popped up on the feed of one of the quilters I follow. I’m not sure how I feel about the end result, to be honest. She did an absolutely incredible job with it, it’s just not a look that I am sure I love.

That's very good work, but also not my cup of tea.
If I wanted a piano cover that would be on the piano regularly, for starters, I would want it to be a solid color...

RealPlayerI like it!

LisaI just started working at a local place that has a 9 foot Steinway that used to belong to Keith Emerson. It has a solid black quilted cover that I really like. I agree with SK - her workmanship is amazing but a solid color would look a lot better IMO. I do kind of want one though - I've taken to covering my piano wiht a blanket because the cats are obsessed with walking on it and a quilted fitted cover would look a lot nicer.

ShiroKuroif we move and end up in a place with an open floor plan (which I am hoping won't happen bc I don't like it when kitchens are part of open floor plans), I would get a cover for my piano and I think I would probably prefer a fitted one.
Wonder how expensive they are...

ShiroKuro https://www.vandaking.com makes a variety of covers and will fit to different pianos. It looks like a standard fabric or vinyl cover for my Yamaha C2 would start at $200, add in a few details (side slits, that kind of thing) and it might get up to $350?
Dol, how much do you think this custom quilted one would have cost? I would guess a lot more but maybe I'm wrong...

Way, way, way more. The one she made is hand quilted so the price would likely be astronomical. For the materials for a king size quilt (assuming high quality quilting cottons) you can expect to pay maybe $300-$400 (including fabric for piecing, backing, as well as batting). To have it custom quilted by a long arm quilter (the fastest method) it would cost an additional $400. A more simple quilting design by a long arm quilter would be maybe $150. If I quilt it myself then I don't pay that cost, but I spend hours at the sewing machine (or rent a long arm machine, which means you are back up to $150 or so). Most quilters will not quilt a king size on a domestic machine. I have done it once. Never again. So assume $600-800 for materials for a king sized quilt. That's not even considering time at all. Then add the complexity of designing a custom cover which is something I hadn't heard of until reading this article.
The moral of the story is if you are ever gifted a hand made quilt cherish it. And if you want a cover for your piano buy one from one of the places that sell them commercially.

I’d need one that wasn’t black, because my cats are leaving a lot of light colored hair on top of the piano that they’re not allowed to be on.

AdagioMDol, you just reminded me that I have a cherished music-themed quilt.

It was made by my friend’s mom Betsy, who was my duet partner at Sonata Piano Camp in 2001. When Betsy passed away, Becky gave this to me. I wrote about it on my blog; it’s a
a very sweet story.
It’s the wrong size for the piano, and I don’t want the cats sitting on it! It comes out every once in a while on the guest bed, but I should probably hang it on the wall.
