Parental Brag
This is a very low level brag, but it makes me feel good anyway.

Rebecca, the Oregon daughter, will be a senior this fall. (I know, I know.)

When she was trying to figure out what to do this summer, I told her that, if she got an internship, I'd pay her expenses for the summer, and she wouldn't need to get a job. So she got an internship. Actually, she set up her own internship. She'd been volunteering at the local humane society, and she talked them into creating an internship position for her. And then she went to the university and turned that internship into college credit.

The internship is only part time, though, so she also started looking for jobs. She did a ton of looking around, and found a server position at a local burger joint. I figured she'd use that money for spending money. A deal's a deal. I'd told her I'd pay her expenses if she got an internship, she got an internship, and that was that.

She texted me today after she got her first paycheck from the server job. She told me that she figured she was making enough money to pay for her own food, so I didn't have to pay for her food going forward.

She didn't have to do that. I wouldn't have asked her to contribute.

Plus, she has enough credits to graduate next spring even if she only goes part-time this year. So, she's dialing down to part time, saving some tuition money, and continuing to work, and will probably continue to pay for her own food.

She wants to be independent, and I'm very proud of her for being a responsible adult and not just skating through her senior year and enjoying herself.

Financial independence is the best! How wonderful that she is actively looking at ways to lighten the load, and strike out on her own. That's the goal, after all. Even though it's kind of poignant when it happens, it's also a "yay parents!" moment as well.

Outstanding. Even if it’s not at a BV.

If that were my daughter, I would reward her spunk by matching her earnings up to $6,000 and very strongly recommend she starts a Roth IRA.

You can only fund an IRA with earned income. She earned some income. No better time to start socking it away.
