Halloween Love Hate..You?
It's only 5:00 here. We are ready.

Mrs pj and I just finished the J-O-L:

I heard Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin are dressing up as Democrats. Nobody will recognize them.

It was a GREAT year.
Perfect weather (and after almost a week of cold rains) so nobody had to wear coats over their costumes.

Unlike last year, I didn't run out of candy - probably because we weren't swamped with teenagers toting pillow cases and dressed as - EEK! - teenagers!

A great many fairy princesses and video game characters came around (felt a bit sad not to recognize the game identities even when I asked the names). Two or three really excellent magic wands were waving around - the best I've ever seen. I wouldn't have been surprised to see them cast a few spells.

My favorites were:

1) Sonic the HedgeHog (my Sonic is now 31) - I even knew to ask why he wasn't asking for chili dogs instead of candy.
2) A knight-looking person appearing to ride on an enormous (inflated?) dragon.

Upon reflection, I only hope he (aged nine or ten) wasn't inspired by first-hand experience of "Game of Thrones".

I hope your neighbors appreciated it.

I don't think there's anything I like about Halloween.

Wow, SO much hate!
Didn't you enjoy it even when you were a kid?
(We need a classic character for Halloween hater - kind of an equivalent to the Grinch.)

It was a team effort. Mrs. pj drew it on the back of an envelope and I executed it on the pumpkin. I would characterize it as "cartoonish" of no particular era.

I drew it on the pumpkin with a black grease pencil (should use something that cleans off better next time). The real trick is having a selection of really good, really sharp knives. I have a Henckels "Professional S" "peeler" which is a 3-inch curved blade (I don't know what the heck you'd peel with it), a "Pro S" very sturdy 3-inch utility knife, and a 4 inch paring knife. I sharpened all of them before starting.

imgur is not working this morning, or I'd post a picture of the knives.

Have you looked into the pumpkin carving kits? The utensils are specially designed to work well with a pumpkin.

I came close to amputating a digit or stabbing myself *so* many times using kitchen knives. I finally bought one of the sets. It does make carving a lot easier...

Neutral. If Halloween disappeared I doubt I'd notice.

T&Ters don't come to my neighborhood; it's rural and very dark and treacherous underfoot after the sun goes down. (Houselights wouldn't help much.)

I got one of those years ago. It was okay. I liked the little saw.

imgur is working again. Here are the knives I used:

Short, sturdy*, and sharp.

*Except the green-handled one. Mrs pj broke an identical knife cutting the top off a pumpkin a couple years ago. Fortunately, Henckels still makes that knife. It's one of my favorites. But for pumpkin carving, I only use it for finishing details where I need a thin, flexible blade.

I enjoyed it as a kid and when I had kids. Our move to the NW corresponded with our final kid starting high school, where the focus on costumes and T or T was declining. We live in a hilly neighborhood where houses are scattered (for example, there are no houses across the street from us). That, combined with what is typically kind of lousy weather, means that we have almost no T or T'ers here.

I guess I'd have to say I'm neutral. I don't miss it.

I just took the pumpkin seeds out of the oven.

I cleaned them, let them dry a while, then gave them a spritz of oil, then a good sprinkle of sea salt and shichimi togarashi. Into the oven at 250 for an hour or so.

Toasty and tasty!
