This is a serious problem. Hookworm used to be common in the US, but now is mostly found only in rural areas with no sewage treatment. In some parts of the southeast, with no other choices people dump their raw sewage into open ditches or simply on the ground around their homes. Hookworm is acquired by skin contact (like bare feet) with raw sewage. Children who contract hookworm experience lifetime cognitive impairment. These people then grow up with limited opportunities and continue to live in poverty in rural areas where they, too, dump their raw sewage in the open exposing the next generation to hookworm. It is truly a vicious cycle. In some areas, officials have moved under the guise of clamping down on this by arresting, jailing, or fining people who dump raw sewage. But if you are already living in poverty, being fined thousands of dollars is not going to help your situation. Such enforcement tends to be targeted at minority communities, leading some to speculate that the enforcement is not as much about public health as it is about persecuting poor and minority people. https://arktimes.com/arkansas-...s-across-the-country By the way, I think that composting or incinerating toilets would help a lot. Contain the waste and neutralize it at the source.
