The Sandwichman.
Bill Froehlig was a fixture on the campus of my university.. He had a cart he hauled around for six miles every night, rain or shine. He sold sandwiches, milk, and ice cream out of that homemade cart. It was the first week of classes in my freshman year when I heard his bosun-like whistle for the first time and wondered what the hell that noise was. An upperclassman explained that it was Sandwichman. And a years long relationship blossomed...

Don't know what possessed me to look him up a few days ago. Found out tons of things I never knew about him. He was an amazing individual. Sadly, he passed away in 2018. Here's his obit:

There is also a 15 minute documentary about him that was shown on the Chicago PBS station. You might enjoy it....

Sanch was an integral part of life at Northwestern. I can't tell you how many of his egg salad sandwiches I ate over the years. RIP Bill.

Your post inspired me to see if I could find out what happened to Ernie, the hotdog vendor at my university. Unfortunately he passed away quite some time ago and his story didn’t end in the happy way such a wonderful man deserved.
