San Francisco's school board voted on Tuesday to rename dozens of public schools that were named after historical figures like George Washington, Junipero Serra and even current U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.

The 44 schools are named for historical figures who "significantly diminished the opportunities of those amongst us to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," according to the text of the resolution approve by the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday.

Some of those figures "engaged in the subjugation and enslavement of human beings; or who oppressed women, inhibiting societal progress; or whose actions led to genocide," the resolution said.

Other figures whose namesake schools will be renamed include Abraham Lincoln, senator and Mexican-American War veteran Robert F. Stockton and naturalist John Muir.

I read elsewhere that it will cost a million bucks to make all these name changes. I'm thinking the money could be better spent elsewhere....

This got me to thinking... in the Scottsdale School district the K-8 schools were all named for local tribes: Paiute, Cocopah, Pima, yada yada.

BUT as far as I can recall their mascot/team names were animals (Broncos, Mustangs, etc.), not Indian related like Braves, Redskins, etc.

I wonder if that may give them a pass if this expands? Or (more likely) the fact that they're in a red state?

There's an old saw that says when a company has too many execs with not enough to do, they spend vast amounts of time and money changing the name of the company.

I thin the SF school board needs a hobby.

Oh c’mon.

They’re still signed in both CA and AZ as So and So Indian Reservation. They’re trying to change their name. The Juanenos still refer to themselves as Indians with regard to their casinos.

Maybe they need a hobby too.

Yeah, my friends from Kha'po Owingeh roll their eyes if I say "native American." And my professor friends roll their eyes (or worse) if I say Indian.

Around here ... and I live within a few miles of land that is considered part of a reservation ... I don't recall hearing the "I" word much if at all. We've also visited a Choctaw museum, and I don't recall any instances of the "I" word being used there at all. But Mary Anna has a better memory than I do, maybe she remembers things I do not.

Might be regional. I'm going by what I've seen in CA and AZ.
