We've done that as well--I let our previous company lapse because I just got so tired of their constant upselling. Then we were gone a lot of this past year (including the smoke/fire portion).

I like to leave windows open as much as possible. It's definitely a reaction to living in AZ, where you had to have windows closed, AC on, for like 9 months out of the year. Plus, I don't mind warmer temps in the house, to a point. If I had to choose, I'd much rather spend the money on heat than on AC. But... this weekend, with a predicted high of 109 on saturday (IN PDX???!!!) I will definitely turn on the AC.

I like windows open, too! In the summer, I open everything in the morning, and close when it’s hot enough for the AC to kick on.

My heating/cooling company doesn’t try (very hard) to upsell me. I’m pretty good at saying no. Except to the service contract.
