I thought mine was both a router and modem.

(Not that I really understand the difference.)

Wirecutter recommended routers

The Comcast device is called a gateway; it performs the functions of a modem (allows you to connect to your internet service provicer) and a router (basically let's you do wifi in your house).

The article you posted is a recommendation for a router, but there is also a link that points to their modem recommendations.

I have an Archer router (different model than the Wirecutter recommendation) and it's been great.

I have a Motorola router (don't remember model number) and it's worked fine also.

I noticed on the last bill that Comcast raised their prices on the cable boxes; am assuming that they also bumped up the price of the gateway. I got rid of my gateway a few years ago. Also dumped one cable box last year and got a Roku instead.
