It is a common building style in Europe, but I think in most cases they are set up as apartments, not individual houses.

Common building style in Santa Fe for what are now downtown buildings. They have substantial interior plazas that have become restaurants and markets ...

The courtyard of the Casa Senna, an old Spanish hacienda from the 1700s that is now a public interior square that is completely shielded from the traffic and bustle of the city outside.

I love courtyard houses. It's a common feature in the southwest, like P*D says. In the snazzier (read expensive) houses in Phoenix/Scottsdale, you'll find them even in new architecture.

There are courtyard houses in New Orleans.
The courtyard needs to be large enough to avoid claustrophobia.
Bob's backyard has a high wall around it. There is concrete on the ground except for where there are plants. It is claustrophobic. I spend very little time there.

I like a lot of the ideas in the Spruce article that Daniel posted.

I love walled gardens. Great example of an English style walled garden at the Chicago Botanic garden. One of my favorites to visit when I go up there.
