It's a dark and subversive meditation on gender politics, wrapped in bubble-gum pink.

Barbie has an existential crisis, embarks on a hero's journey, falls into a dark night of the soul, only to be transformed.

All the while it is totally hilarious. I laughed my ass off through the entire film.

My favorite part might be the opening scene, a riff on the opening of "2001: A Space Odyssey" complete with the Strauss soundtrack. So over-the-top and imaginative. Great writing, too.
