quote:
Singer, actor, producer and activist Harry Belafonte, who spawned a calypso craze in the U.S. with his music and blazed new trails for African-American performers, has died of congestive heart failure at his Manhattan home. He was 96.

My uncle, who was a big fan of Belafonte, lived with my grandparents. I grew up hearing Belafonte's albums at my grandparents' house.

RIP, Mr Belafonte.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I was surprised when I looked for further information to find that he was both born and died in NYC. Based on his music, I had always assumed a Caribean connection.

He belonged to a generation that is rapidly passing away now. That's reflected in how many of the people from that generation seem like someone I've always known.
