Some covid-19 patients taken off ventilators are taking days or even weeks to wake up

‘It’s a big deal,’ says a Weill Cornell neurologist. The consequences range from mental fog, and mild memory lapses, to severe neurological problems.

Sorry, it's a WaPo story. Might be free; I think their coronavirus stories are accessible to all.

That’s terrifying.

BTW I can’t get WaPo to show me anything anymore. I had a trial thru Amazon, and they messed up my account somehow. I canceled before the trial ended and now I can’t get signed in, so even the free articles I can’t see. It’s a bit of a pita. I will try to find this article thru my library acct but that is a multistep process...

Well that explains why I couldn't find it through my library account.

I set up the trial through Amazon and then it *never* worked, I got in this weird loop where I would log in, be told my password was wrong, change the password and try to log in again, and not be able to access any articles. Log out, log in again, be told the password was wrong. Rinse and repeat. I would try different ways of logging in (you can select through Amazon or not) and it was always the same. Very frustrating, esp. since I'd like to have access to their articles as an alternative to NYT...

WTG, thanks for the link, I just read it.

This is terrifying. They need to try to figure out what commonalities might be there in the people who have such a hard time coming back from the sedation.

It's also all the more reason to do everything possible to avoid that kind of ventilation.

I feel so, so grateful that my aunt (who was hospitalized with covid) was able to recover without it. She used the non-invasive oxygen mask for weeks, and then changed to the nasal cannula, but never had intubation or the corresponding sedation. She is turning 75 on Tuesday, we just had a Zoom party for her yesterday.
