Failed a hearing test yesterday. Went to Costco where I got the most thorough exam ever. Costco will not sell me a hearing aid until I have a document signed by a physician. The audiologist found that I have a hole in my right eardrum and a growth. The growth may be a big problem. The picture shows a dark area and a whitish thing shaped like a pearl. . Not sure which is the growth. When I was in Moab an audiologist told me I had a cancer in that ear. An MRI in Grand Junction did not find anything. The surgeon's that perform the surgery for the cancer must avoid cutting a facial nerve or that side of the face will collapse. Once saw the head of the ENT department at the U of Colorado hospital for the vertigo problem. Plan to call today.

Chas, be careful in using the word cancer. There is a condition, which I have, called acoustic neuroma, a growth on the auditory nerve or the cochlea. It SOUNDS like cancer but is NOT malignant, just sits there, and causes hearing loss. They can also cause balance issues. Some are corrected by surgery, some reduced by radiation, some not treated at all, depending on what and where it is. It was sudden onset hearing loss with me, and I resisted hearing aids for a long time but finally got them a couple of months ago. If it is really a malignancy, do see some good people about it, specialists. Sending all good vibes your way!

That bites. I'm so sorry to hear you got yet another twist. Get lots of second, third, fourth opinions.

I'm so sorry, Chas. I hope this turns out not to be a big deal. I'm going to see an ENT specialist for vertigo issues today. An MRI suggests that I have some sort of looped blood vessel into my cerebellum, but no one so far can say that it's a problem, or even the cause of the vertigo. We'll see what this specialist says.

Good luck, CHAS. You're in Tucson? I'm assuming there will be more specialists there than in CO. I'd reread realplayer's note. I'm guessing the Costco audio person was at least as concerned about liability than about your inner ear. Hoping it turns out to be nothing serious.

Thank you all. Have been impressed with U of Co. hospitals. Have an appt at a branch April 5. Was glad to find one so soon. That ear feels something like an ear feels when the head is stopped up with a bad cold. It hurts a bit. A fellow farmer from my home town had cancer surgery in both ears. He is fine. Chances are it is non-malignant whatever it is. Bob started levodopa for Parkinson's last week. He will be staying in Tucson for appointments. Don fell in the kitchen and got a hairline fracture in his hipbone about four weeks ago. It is ok now. He is going skiing today. I want to get home in time to ski before I go to the doc.

I'm sorry you're getting scary news and am sending you good vibes that all turns out for the best. (I know that sounds like Republican "hopes and prayers," but it really isn't.)

Thanks again. Have calmed. Thanks for the good vibes. Don't think anyone here could send Repub thoughts and prayers if they tried.
