My good chef’s knife, bread knife and paring knife? Absolutely not. Steak knives, sure.

Hell no.

The cheap steak knives, maybe. A sharp knife, never.

Depends on the knife, the dishwasher, and the detergent; but mostly the knife.

Tried to keep the knives out of the dishwasher.
I get no respect.
The big ones don't go in.

Nope. Not the good knives that live in the knife block. (Wusthof and Henckels)

Butter knives, table knives, cheap steak knives, sure.

And now I can’t look at the word knives without it looking wrong.

I’ve never had a problem with the wooden handles in the dishwasher than the color of the wood changes.

Some steak knives rust in the dishwasher - like new Henckels knives, for example. The 45 year old Henckels we got as a wedding present still look perfect. I sent the new knives back to Amazon (good riddance!) and am gathering up old ones on eBay.

All of my other knives also go through the dishwasher and it doesn’t seem to hurt them a bit. I did have a filet knife that rusted so it went back to Amazon too.

Dishwasher Darwinism.

Flatware knives, yes. Chef's knives, no -- even if the handles aren't wood.

I did mine in the dishwasher for decades. Didn't seem to hurt them at all, but I have a special place for them where they don't get banged around or anything. But then I put a quick edge on mine fairly often. Now do the more expensive ones by hand.

All sterling gets hand washed here. And the holloware silver plate with the stainless steel blades, too. Don’t trust those handles!

I have a set of Henckels knives that are more than 40 years old. Back then, the five star Henckels had solid polyurethane handles. Those knives have been bulletproof ... I've lost a few steak knives, but only damaged one. I don't think any of them have ever rusted, despite being submerged in water and mistreated in every way possible. Other than sticking one into Doug.
