COVID odds and ends
OK, so here are the mix and match rules.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/2...-moderna-and-jj.html

I have not heard any good reason to switch vaccines, so I'll get a Pfizer chaser to follow my first two Pfizer shots from earlier this year....

From this article:

quote:
And the booster recommendation for people whose occupations put them at risk did not pass.

This (occupation) is my sole reason for getting a booster. I was already thinking that I'll watch and wait a little longer, this underscores that approach.

I'll pass along what my researcher friend said after I sent her that article asking how necessary the boosters are. She does see patients on a limited basis in the eye clinic at her university. She jumped at the first opportunity to get her initial (Moderna) vaccination...

quote:
I'm also not convinced. Now that Moderna is approved, I'm not in any rush to get the booster. For one, Moderna has shown higher levels of antibodies than Pfizer in the long term, maybe simply because the 2nd dose was 3x higher than Pfizer's. Higher levels of side effects, too. We're doing the research on the fly (because we have to), but in addition to not knowing if it is necessary for everyone we don't know if more people will have serious side-effects. COVID is scary but so are vaso-occlusive events. Third, there are many in the veterinarian community that argue for limited vaccinations because of the concern that more vaccinations are associated with more autoimmune rxns.

If I were immunocompromised or worked directly with a lot of people (such as policemen, many of whom won't get the 1st shot, or in a COVID ward), I would get the booster now. But I mask everywhere and have limited exposure to people, even if I am fold (it's a contraction). I probably will get a booster eventually, especially as more safety data come out. But not today.

Her remarks about veterinarians refer to a lot of research that has been done regarding annual vaccines that had been standard protocol for years for companion animals. Much has been learned about duration of immunity and possible autoimmune effects. Protocols have been tweaked over the years to reflect the new information. Annual vaccination isn't the recommended protocol anymore, at least not for most vaccines....

edit: And to be completely fair and balanced, I'll add what another friend who is a geneticist said:

quote:
It's just a little bit of protein, what are people so afraid of.

I want to get mine but I have to see what the CDC is saying today. I'll get it asap. Why stop now.

I feel a little disheartened by the number who are testing positive in the US. Frowner

The Supreme Court declined Friday to block Maine's requirement for health care workers to receive a Covid-19 vaccine, even though it doesn't contain a religious exemption.

The Maine order applies to health care workers in hospitals, nursing homes and doctor's offices took effect Friday. State officials say most of those covered by the order have complied.

At the Supreme Court, Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch dissented. Two of the court's other conservatives, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh, said they agreed the court should not take the case, because it came on an emergency appeal without benefit of a full briefing.

An experimental pill to treat Covid developed by the US company Pfizer cuts the risk of hospitalisation or death by 89% in vulnerable adults, clinical trial results suggest.

The drug - Paxlovid - is intended for use soon after symptoms develop in people at high risk of severe disease.

It comes a day after the UK medicines regulator approved a similar treatment from Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD).

Pfizer says it stopped trials early as the initial results were so positive.

The UK has already ordered 250,000 courses of the new Pfizer treatment along with another 480,000 courses of MSD's molnupiravir pill.

The Pfizer drug, known as a protease inhibitor, is designed to block an enzyme the virus needs in order to multiply. When taken alongside a low dose of another antiviral pill called ritonavir, it stays in the body for longer.
