I don't blame them. And of course the ones who leave will be the most mobile faculty members, i.e. the ones with the best track record that other institutions would like to acquire. But to DeSantis and his GOP acolytes in the state the departures are a good thing. It allows them to sweep the place clean and rebuild it as a very different institution. The fact that they are wrecking the institution in the present, and creating chaos and havoc for current students, means very little to them.

So PD, do you think the degradation of this college will affect the students ability to get a job? Or will they get hired first because of it?

I haven't a clue. I suspect individual variation among students will driving hiring/salary much more than any DeSantis effect.

I think that P*D is right, with the caveat that the changes could affect employability if New College is rebuilt to the extent that it's seen as akin to Liberty College or Bob Jones University. My guess is that the majority of employers in most fields see a bachelor's degree as a box to tick in screening applicants. However, a degree from Liberty or Bob Jones would be a marker that some employers would gravitate toward and others would avoid in a way that wouldn't be true of most colleges and universities. My other guess is that employers' attitudes would vary greatly by region.

What MA said. So, I think it's too soon to say how this will impact graduates of New College. But without a doubt it will have a very negative impact on the students there now, and the faculty who remain. The other question is how much this will impact New College's ability to make new hires. People who have choices will not take a position there, but people who are desperate for any faculty position might.

Yes, most graduates went on to graduate or professional school when I was there. Many of these same schools will stop admitting New College graduates.

https://www.heraldtribune.com/...-status/70441468007/ Ranked 5th in public colleges nationwide?! Well, in my day, it was ranked 1st! My mother told me that if I had nothing good to say then I should say nothing at all.

On a more serious note, having one's alma mater deliberately, politically attacked and ruined is not a fun moment in one's life. I don't want to say what I think of DeSantis because I can't find words which would be even mildly appropriate.

Joe, this might interest you. https://www.heraldtribune.com/...seasons/70522736007/ Stephen Miles was on my committee. His first love was New Music. He taught musicology. We had a second music professor. He taught the history of music and gave piano lessons. The New College New Music festival lasted 24 years.

What committee was this? Did you do a piano degree at New College? for some reason, I thought you didn't play the piano, forgive me if I'm wrong!

You're not wrong. The piano is my favorite instrument. I only wish I could play it. We had to write a senior thesis and defend it at a baccalaureate exam. The thesis committee consisted of the thesis sponsor and two other professors.
