Slightly off-topic, but my favorite part of having young adult children is the grocery store calls. "I'm standing in the canned goods and I need to know what kind of tomato sauce you use." "How do you make your vegetable soup?" And my favorite call from my very, very smart son: Him: "Mom, what's in chicken-and-rice?" Me, knowing that he's asking about the seasonings and vegetables I use, but unable to resist being an azzhole: "Chicken. And rice."

We were young and northerners... After a trip to New Orleans, we ordered a package to make red beans and rice. Back home, we looked at the ingredients of rice, dried beans with spices and a little oil and wondered how the beans were ever going to get soft. MrsTuner called up the ladies from the cookbook/store and asked about that, and the woman on the phone exclaimed: Child?!? You gotta soak them beans!!
