Someone is snitching twigs off the lilac outside the dining room window.

We had a mom and pop and three kids last year. It seems one of the kids stayed here and the rest of the family moved on. Now, he or she (can't really tell) has a sweetie and they are setting up a home.

We're looking forward to watching them this year. Last year's couple was very territorial -- even attacking a raccoon on the back patio.

So far this year, we also have robins, a spotted towhee, a couple varied thrushes, pileated woodpeckers, and the usual assortment of LBBs. It's going to be a very birdy summer. And the cats sit in the window and chat with the birdies daily.

And it wasn't just the raccoon... Last summer I was out sweeping the back patio under the hawthorn tree. I felt something wet hit my arm. Bird poop. I looked up and the jay was sitting on a branch about ten feet up. I'm sure it was deliberate.

Beautiful bird!

We have some little brown birds - some 20 of them - nesting deep in the bushes on the hill this year. I can see them through the window and they make Sam crazy. He can't get up there though, so they're safe enough.

It's fun to watch them fly back and forth with stuff to build their nests.

Had to look that one up! Beautiful.

I saw an Eastern Bluebird at my birdbath last week. Second time we have seen them here, and have not been able to attract them yet.

Everybody in the east is used to our Blue Jays. In New Mexico I have become acquainted with the Pinyon Jay. The Stellar supposedly is found in NM, but I haven't seen any yet. Ditto for the Canada Jay and Woodhouse's Scrub Jay.
