I was reading Big Al's thread about the chestnuts, and his observations about the elimination of an entire species due to disease or insects.

Like many towns, mine turned to ash trees as replacements for the elms decimated by Dutch elm disease. Fast forward a few decades, and the ashes were no match for the emerald ash borers.

My town decided to use some of the ash trees that were removed from our parkways in the construction of our new police station. Turned into the classic "make lemonade out of lemons" story.
