Last week I woke up to the sound of yet another smoke detector going off - but it wasn't a smoke detector after all. It was a water alarm - one of several I put in the basement in case the sump pump or the water heater malfunctioned. They're cheap on Amazon.

The water was actually coming from the washing machine above - the drain hosd has come out of the drain pipe and the washer drained all over the laundry room. The water eventually made it's way to the basement and that's what set off the alarm.

The hose on that washer is an awful design (LG) very thin and light weight. I've never had a washer do that before. The fix was simple enough once I learned that it was required:

Good to know - we have an LG and accessing the hoses is a real pain. I'm actually going to have a drywall dude come out and open up the opposite side of the wall and install a little door so we can get it from the other side. Right now you have to haul the machine out to get to the hoses, which doesn't work well in an emergency.

That happened to us in Maine, right after they hooked it up. Luckily I was right there and saw it. Never had happened before. We’ve cinched them down ever since.

Good to know, though we don't have an in-wall drain because our washer is in the basement next to a utility sink and the discharge hose goes into that.

Hard to believe it isn't a standard part of an installation to put that tie on. It's not like it's a huge expense....
