Watched the Hamilton movie tonight.

My goodness, that was terrific.

I never saw it in the theater, and I’m kind of glad. I would have had crummy seats, it would’ve have been the touring cast, and I would have been grinding my teeth at having paid so very much.

Watching it on TV . . . Well, we watched the opening number, hit pause, looked at each other, and then went back to the beginning and watched closed captioning.

That made all the difference. It is really hard to catch all of the words without closed captioning. Also, being able to see the actors faces was awesome. I absolutely loved the casting.

I’m definitely going to watch it again.

I loved it, too!

I was lucky enough to see it in Detroit last year. Touring cast and meh seats. The cast was phenomenal (Rob actually liked the performance of the guy who played Hamilton in the Detroit cast better than Lin-Manuel Miranda! I’m too enthralled with Miranda’s talent to even consider this possibility.). Even though our seats were only ok (very back of the rear orchestra, right side) it didn’t decrease my enjoyment at all.

I have always been sceptical of filmed versions of stage productions. The magic of a live performance has a huge impact on me, and I worried that it would just be disappointing. In the case of Hamilton, I needn’t have worried. It was as impactful as seeing it live (though in a different way) and I loved being able to catch some little details I never would catch in a live performance. I will definitely be watching it again!

Yeah. I'm afraid Lin was the weak link. I was willing to look the other way on it.

But Jefferson? That guy lit up the stage. He won the Tony over Washington and the king. No contest.

That original cast was beyond brilliant. I'm so glad I got to see them, even if it wasn't in person.

And, as brilliant as EVERYONE was ... and they were all great ... Jonathan Groff as King George steals the show.

As far as vocal talent goes, just watch this performance of "Helpless". It's just fabulous.

By the way, if you ever doubt whether Lin-Manuel Miranda gets it ... yes, he gets it.

A Chorus Line is a musical that is, at least in part, about the sacrifice of doing what you love even while blending in and being a member of the chorus. So, notice ... the people from Hamilton doing the solos here are NOT the stars of Hamilton, they are the members of the chorus of Hamilton. And it demonstrates how magnificently talented even the members of the chorus are.

Jefferson, Lafayette - same dude. (In the play, obviously Big Grin ).

I loved it. I agree that Lin-Manuel was the weaker link in a cast of amazingly talented people, but like Dol I'm more than willing to overlook that. The disconnect for me was knowing that Hamilton could be a bit of a jerk, and lot of people hated his guts. But Miranda projects such sincerity and warmth that the Hamilton as Jerk character was simply never there. But I hesitate to even bring this up, because I think Miranda is a spectacular talent and seems to also be a wonderful human being.

I'll definitely watch it again.

Re: King George - what a scene-chewing part. I loved it. Apparently at some point after the original cast moved on, the King George part was also played by Andrew Rannels (Rannals?). I'm guessing he was more than up to the task.

I’ve looked into it, you can cancel anytime. So consider it a rental for 6.99. Just set a reminder to cancel. I’ll probably do it myself at some point.
