Ice fishing
One of my co-workers who used to ice fish had a tried and true maxim about going out on the ice: "Always take your buddy's pickup truck"

A whole bunch of fishermen in Door County had to be rescued today. I'm guessing their ice fishing shanties and pickup trucks are history....

Lake Michigan is awesomely scary.

Very, very dangerous.

I did part of my growing up in upstate NY. People going out on ice with tragic consequences was common.

But 66 fisherman on 3 ice floats? That's extreme.

Two things I like least in the world.

Ice.

And fishing.

From what I know of ice fishing I believe the primary component is whisky.

Indeed, but from what I can tell that is what basements are for.

And VFW halls.

Both are generally heated in winter, or so I’m told.

Lake Moraine, just off of Colgate's campus, froze solid each winter. People used it as a cross-country ski course and a place for fun trick driving on occasion. Ice would be several feet thick. The ice would break in April (or sometimes May) and sound like rifle shots all day, each crack reverberating up and down the valley.

Yep, I used to live "up north" (in two different "up norths") and when the ice is good, no problem, but when it's not so good, it's very scary!!!

I suspect the ice has been late freezing this year if condtions have been like those around this region this year. Lake effect snow has still been occurring.

During the time I worked in northern Minnesota, I recall all the ice shanties that occupied the lakes through the winter. There were a few who tried to stretch the ice fishing season beyond its limits and had a shanty bobbing in the lake as the ice receded.

They used to have a competition around here. In Idaho Springs (iirc), they would park an old beatup car on the ice, then sell raffle Tixs on the date and time it would sink as the ice melted.

Not sure if they still do that or not. Smiler
