Atlanta, Tasers, and Mayor Bottoms
Everyone should watch this. It's a short documentary video interview of a former Baltimore police officer.

Former Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe was charged Wednesday with 11 counts, including felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, in the killing of Rayshard Brooks, the latest in a string of Black people dying after altercations with police.

If convicted, Rolfe is facing the possibility of the death penalty or life in prison.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Rolfe and fellow officer Devin Brosnan, who was also at the scene and is facing three charges.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said Brooks' cordial and cooperative demeanor before the attempt to arrest him played a major role in the decision to charge Rolfe, because Brooks did not appear to present a threat.

"Mr. Brooks never displayed any aggressive behavior during the 41 minutes and 17 seconds'' before Rolfe tried to handcuff him, Howard said.

The DA also pointed out Rolfe and Brosnan did not tell Brooks he was being arrested for driving under the influence and did not attempt to provide him medical attention after Rolfe shot him, as required.

Howard said Brosnan is cooperating as a state witness and acknowledged standing on Brooks' body after the shooting, for which the officer has been charged.

I wonder how many punches and tazer firings can be earned per minute of cordial conversation with a cop beforehand. There must be an exchange rate written down somewhere.

Woah. I did not see this coming.

Since I am opposed to the death penalty in all instances (all. full stop), I am of course opposed to it here as well.

Wow. This is going to be long and messy....

"After shooting Brooks, Rolfe said "I got him" and kicked him, and Brosnan then stood on Brooks' shoulder, Howard said. The officers did not provide medical aid to Brooks for over two minutes after shooting him, Howard said."

Yup. Just like I said: Clear case of retaliatory force.

This is the first I'm hearing of these details. Where is this written?

Also, how damning.

If 2020 was the year we all learned the phrase ‘social distancing’, 2021 will be the year we all learn the phrase ‘Ferguson Effect’.

Still photos, and testimony of the officer who didn't shoot.

Why did he run?

He had been in jail.

Apparently any contact with police currently would have put him back in jail.

One bystander had this happen 10 ft away. Even he was afraid of getting shot.

The second cop got charged with aggravated assault?

quote:
Officer Brosnan, who remains on the police force on administrative duty, was charged with three counts, including aggravated assault and violations of oath, Mr. Howard said, adding that Officer Brosnan is cooperating with prosecutors in the investigation.

Thanks for the link Cindy. I’m now seeing that description in more articles.

Another thing I’d like to see covered in more detail is the resignation of the police chief. Did she resign over a disagreement with how the mayor handled the officers’ dismissal? I think I read something to that effect but now can’t find it.
