What a shame then that not only his base but some moderates and Democrats have been moved to support him, apparently impressed with his handling of this mega crisis.

And this even before the positive (permanent?) shifts very recently - primarily in being willing to defer to true experts.

The Republicans are offering the appearance of strong leadership on a national level. The Democrats are offering virtually nothing.
