The sound so loud
I was surprised to read about the monitoring equipment available at the time of the Krakatoa eruption.

Brief review of science and technology in the early 1880s ...

1880: Edison discovers the "Edison Effect" (thermionic emissions from a hot cathode into a vacuum)

1881: Savoy Theatre in London is electrically lighted. New surgical techniques: laparotomy, modern C-section, neo-natal incubators. The sphygmomanometer is invented.

1882: Italian physicist Luigi Palmieri detects helium on Earth for the first time through its D3 spectral line when he analyzes the lava of Mount Vesuvius.

1883: The Reynolds number in fluid mechanics. Ion theory to explain conductivity in electrolytes. Charles Fritts constructs the first solar cell using the semiconductor selenium on a thin layer of gold. And Krakatoa explodes!

I have lots of fun in my international (trade, relations) classes introducing students to the world of the late 19th century, which most of them think is impossibly long ago and utterly alien.

That's nothing. You should hear it when the subwoofers kick in... lol

Seriously, that's a pretty elaborate line-up of audio and home theater equipment, Mark. Would you like to give us a run-down of what everything is and what, if anything, you'd like to improve.

The turntable is a classic Technics SL-1200 MK5. It weighs just under 30 lbs. It has custom machined, isolation feet with a sorbathane core, that are height adjustable for leveling the turntable. Under the feet are two bamboo cutting boards from IKEA that have a drip channel cut into them. I placed 4 stainless steel ball bearings in the channels which provides a very small contact point between the cutting boards. The bottom board has sorbathane rubber pads that help with isolations as well.

2 Klipsch R-120SW Subwoofers - 12" Front-Firing Spun-Copper IMG Woofer All-Digital Amplifier with 400 Watts Peak Power Volume, Low Pass Crossover and Phase Control Line Level/LFE RCA Inputs for Maximum Receiver Compatibility

For Music, It will typically be just the RF-7s in play, but sometimes (heck most of the time) I like the extended low frequencies of the subwoofers. Especially when listening to classic progressive rock like YES, 1970s Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull, etc... Even classical music can get more exciting with the subwoofers. For Jazz it is strictly the 2 RF-7s and I will usually hook up the 8 watt tube amp.

Desperately need a new AVR. I want to go 7.2.4 Dolby ATMOS but that will set me back a couple to maybe 4 or 5 grand. Need to save up a bit. lol

Volcanic activity in Indonesia on Friday, just one day after I originally started this thread.

I give stock tips, too.

quote:
Anak Krakatau, a volcano that emerged from the remains of the biggest volcano blast recorded by the Krakatau volcano in 1883, erupted twice on Friday evening, spewing out a 500-meter-high column of ash during the second eruption, which lasted more than 38 minutes.

Heard no mention of frogs raining from the sky.

That is spectacular footage, but more likely to have been from the 2018 eruption. For one thing, the volcano post-2018 had significant collapse, and isn't that beautiful smooth cone any longer.
