What is the point of all the strings in the middle of the fretboard that he never uses? Can’t reach them, except for an occasional strum. Open tuning for those? A waste of real estate?

The article doesn’t really explain what the strings do. I doubt they’re sympathetic strings.

A cynic might say, with 17 tuned strings, why need a fretboard? Play them like a piano.
