I called Don's sister this morning. I left the hospital before she met with the palliative care guy. She then made the four hour drive home.
She told me that Don had called her. A nurse told him his phone was with his meds. He had ordered breakfast. He has been unable to swallow and was receiving a little water since Saturday.
He knew nothing about how he got there. Had to tell him everything I knew from finding him on the floor to this morning. Did not know he had quit breathing, etc.
He is being treated for a severe bladder infection. That probably limited what the kidney could do to eliminate the drugs he was taking and they accumulated.

WTF?
A deadhead would say, "What a strange trip it has been."

Wait. Is he now able to swallow (ordered breakfast)? Is he feeling better after the meds cleared? I wish him comfort.

What a turn! I'm really surprised that the medical team didn't do any simple toxicology work to see what was in his system.

He sounded good. Do not know if he has recovered his mental faculties, but he is coherent.
Can only assume the chemicals have cleared.
He is now getting Dilaudid for the pain.
He is stuttering again. That started after one of his femur surgeries.
I still have whiplash. Will drive down to the hospital tomorrow.

I'm so sorry to hear the overall news, but glad that Don seems to be improving. The mental issues are no doubt being affected by anaesthesia and dilaudid, hopefully.

Whiplash, indeed! Wishing peace and comfort to both of you.

Yesterday I called and asked where the extra mailbox keys are. This mornng he called and asked if I had found them. That is a big step better than he was.
There is only one antibiotic for the bladder infection he has.
The doctor told him the antibiotic does not seem to be working, but the improvement is evidence that it must be working at some level. huh
From what Don says and from what I have gathered when that antibiotic quits working there are no more treatments available.

Agreed, given that they knew what he was taking and how the drugs are metabolized.

Glad he's doing better.

I don't understand why, but the infection caused Don to lose control of his legs. He cannot walk.
They are looking for a place for rehab, possibly in Eagle, which is halfway between my place and his sister's home.

Well that's no good. Is it permanent, or something he'll likely recover from?

I don't know and I doubt the doctor's know. Have heard, "... it's a complicated case." several times

The location of the infection depends upon which doctor is speaking.

People can get really loopy when they have a UTI. Whenever a resident at the place where my Mom lived seemed to have a sudden cognitive decline, the nurse would order a urinalysis. Almost always came up positive. Weird.

"...depends upon which doctor is speaking."

We got that when my brother was in a coma from a car accident and, very much so (to the point it upset her as much as us) when my mother was in the hospital dying of cancer.

It's frustrating. I'm sorry.

Any updates?

He was moved to a rehab center Tuesday. Sounds like his old self. He is miserable there and is plotting to get out ASAP.

I am still recovering from the whiplash of dying/not dying.

I may pick him up today.
