Apple did it again
iOS 15 for iPad. Rearranged everything on my home screen. Put their stooopid app library* or whatever it’s called on the bar at the bottom of the home screen, and once again changed the controls in Safari, so everything I could do without looking doesn’t work AGAIN.

I wish that when they have an update like this they gave you a list of all the changes and you can opt out of them one at a time. Or better, make them all opt-in.

*You can remove the app library from the bottom of the screen. Go to settings, home and dock, and turn off app library.

Oh, and those freaks also make the spell checker capitalize all their stooopid features like App Library.

It is worse than that. While trying to set up this house I installed my regular Google Chromecast TVs and expected them to work like they did before. They don’t.

The newest TV has Apple Play and it seems to have taken over the entire world. I can no longer access chromecast anywhere except YouTube.

I’ll bet Apple thinks this is clever.

Apple is spectacular at hardware and awful at software. This isn't news.

Yep, I updated to iOS in my phone and omg. What a mess.

I’m mostly used to safari now, and there are some things I like better but mostly the changes are just a pita.

I am not looking forward to dealing with it on my iPad …

Mrs pj’s iPad updated itself. It gave her a list of all of the passwords she’s ever used and pointed out the ones that have been used for more than one account.

She is not happy about this.

I hate that! Apple isn't alone. M'soft also changes the user interface every time it updates the Office Suites. It's so annoying.

Yeah. I *hate* the freakin' "ribbon" UI. And I hear they've changed it again.

My iMac always slows down a lot after an update. I can usually find a fix online but implementing it is complicated.

Every time I think I hate Apple I look at the value of all the Apple stock I bought at $2 a share and all is forgiven.

I really should upgrade my iMac, now running its original El Capitan, to the newest OS, Monterey. But just before installing, I got a message that my printer’s scanner and manual would be no longer compatible, and there are no updates from Canon.

Buy a new printer? My daughter says nobody scans anymore, they just take pics of documents with their phones. Is that true? Sounds weird and clumsy to me.

Yes, this is true *only* for people who scan rarely and only one page at a time.

I have a very good scanner app on my phone (I got one that was maybe $3 rather than a free one). I use it for tons of work purposes -- like, meeting with a student, scan in a completed form for them or hand-written doc to send them as a pdf. Very convenient.

If I need a pdf of a book chapter, or a pdf of a multi-page musical score, using the phone is just too time-consuming. I have an HP printer at home, or access to a super multi-functional copier/scanner at work.

When I'm going a 50-page chapter, using the scanner at work is the faster, HP is second. I tried with my phone once and it was the biggest PITA ever.

Oh, and for musical scores, I find I get better consistency (and need to little to zero after-editing) when I use the work machine or my HP.

tl;dr: it depends on what you're scanning and how many pages it is.

My banjo teacher apparently scans things with her phone using something called Turbo Scan. The quality is very good.

She writes out tab and words for songs, then scans them to PDF and sends them to me.

On a related topic:

I am just starting to learn about uploading music to my iPad, with the objective of using a foot pedal for page “turning.”

Seems pretty easy to upload a pdf as a document, but if I want to use one of my own pencil-annotated scores, the help videos on YouTube show users hunched over their iPhone or iPad cameras, shooting one page after another. I guess that’s how it has to be. Supposedly there’s a way to unify 30 pages of score into a single document.

Yes, RP, it sounds like you need a few tools to stream-line things! I have been using my iPad and a bluetooth pedal for musical scores for a pretty long time.

What table are you using? What app for displaying the scores on the tablet?

Re consolidating multiple pages into one file, the method depends on how you made the pdf in the first place.

In fact, you should be able to create a single file at the time you make the pdf.

If you're going to be doing this a lot, here is where you'd be much better off with a laptop and printer/scanner, IMO.

The iPhone (or iPad) scanner apps are really best for small jobs.

I have an iPad Pro and ForScore, and AirTurn Duo. These were recommended by other pianists as just about non-negotiable.

I am just at baby steps. Uploaded one complete piece to the tablet. AirTurn is still in the box! I’ll use you as my mentor when I’m further along! Smiler
