ShiroKuroYeah, I've been reading a bit about this, very concerning.
We're all gonna get covid sooner or later. All we can do is get vaccinated, get boosters when appropriate, and get in the best possible shape we can so we're giving ourselves the best chance to get through to the other side. From what I've read, the best situation is to be fully vaccinated AND have survived a breakthrough. The only control we have is the bit about self care.

Well, that description fits both my young 'uns. Me, I'm just triple vaccinated.

Interesting. South African scientists were calling it the Nu variant. But I guess WHO already had a Nu and didn’t want to name it Xi so they skipped to the next letter.

Root for better treatments and better testing.

AmandaJust what I was afraid of.

...Except that it is apparently far more dangerous than previous variants.
At best, it looks look we are going to be forced to take recurrent tweaked vaccines.
I wonder if it wouldn't be more economical to crank out billions of new vaccines active against all previous forms plus the new variants (the new one especially) to send to Africa and other un/under-treated areas rather than original vaccine.
Why treat them with that one (oh so belatedly) when it appears that the brand new mutant appears likely resistant to both Delta and the early virus?
Seems te old one is already outdated.
(After testing to see if that's true, of course).
Otherwise, this is quite a merry-go-round. For once I'd like to see the US (and other wealthier nations) act proactively.

wtgRight now it's not really known if it's more dangerous; I've seen several articles that say we won't know for several weeks.
I also read that the cases that they're seeing are actually mild. But that came from doctors in South Africa, a country whose tourist business is kinda getting shut down right now. SA isn't happy about the travel restrictions and thinks the world is overreacting, so maybe it's a bit of wishful thinking.
The rest of Africa has been remarkably free from COVID throughout the ongoing pandemic despite the lack of vaccines. Scientists aren't sure why.
It'll take about 100 days for a revised mRNA vaccine to be ready for distribution.
