The Costco asparagus looked a little tired when we were there a couple of days ago. The white mushrooms were very fresh, though. The baby spinach was a mixed bag. Some of them had some visibly gummy leaves. I got a box that didn't have those in hopes that there weren't some hidden below. Quirt is our usual Costco-goer, so I'm just learning the ropes since they moved to town and it's not a big hike to get there. My sense is that a lot of the produce is perfectly adequate and some is exciting (chanterelles!). Some things, though, suffer from time spent in the warehouse, and this is a particular bad thing when you can only buy those things in large quantities that you might have trouble eating before they spoil. In general, I'd say that nonperishables are the thing to go to a warehouse store to get.

MA — Well. Sounds like there can be a lot of variability from store to store (warehousing, shelf stocking, etc.)

I thought of one more...the organic French green beans can be quite good. Thursday morning (senior hours) or Friday morning are good times to shop for produce. They're getting shipments to stock up for the weekend and the produce is at its freshest. Monday morning not so good. All that's left is the stuff that was beaten up or rejected by the weekend crowds. We don't eat much meat, but the St Louis spareribs are good, as is the boneless leg of lamb. I also buy some of the prime sirloin to use in all kinds of recipes. Also chicken, available in both regular and organic. I forgot about the prosecco. I'll have to get some next time I'm there. I like it with a splash of Aperol.

If you live near a Meijer I have found their small avocados, 4 to a bag, to be consistently good. I always have a bag for avocado toast.

Costco had bucks off of stroopwafels so I picked up a package and was all excited to try them...I was totally disappointed....

You know you’re supposed to put it on top of your cup of hot coffee, and let it get all melty before you eat it, right?

I did know that but decided to try the first one straight, no coffee warmer. Meh. Figured the steaming was important so tried the next one that way. It didn’t help. The caramel was softer but I just didn’t like the flavor. I’m going back to the Kirkland almond biscotti and my Swedish cardamom cookies that I order from Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Door County.

Turns out “Butter Cheese” is a thing. Who knew? It tastes exactly like it sounds! I got it on a pizza and now I’m hooked. Traders is supposed to have it but didn’t. I’ve seen a cheese shop in my travels and am going to check for it there. I know it’s going to make the most outrageous grilled cheese ever!

Sounds decadent. Can you feel your arteries hardening as you eat it?

We've had cardamom cookies amongst our Christmas mix for a number of years since I got a recipe from our old friend here, JustMe. Made me wonder what she is doing today. I believe Beelady may still be in contact with her. In my state of slowly recovering mobility, I spent some time looking at old computer files. I haven't seen or heard from quite a few people who show up in those files. It made me wonder about them as well. Big Al

I love the avocados at Costco. I buy them hard as rocks. Leave on the counter until just barely soft. Put in the fridge and they last for many weeks and are perfect inside until the last one. Maybe they come from a different locale here than on the east coast? Generally I avoid buying fresh produce at Costco because the huge portions rot before the two of us can eat them all.
